A very good friend of mine gifted me a wholesome book a couple of months ago, while I was departing Budapest. The book, has given me an interesting yet fulfilling perspective about life. Thank you my dear friend :) It goes without saying, questions did find a way to squeeze in between the love of literature.
The book, "Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Café" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a sequel to his first novel and continues to delve into the mystical and emotionally charged world of a unique café in Tokyo. This café offers its customers a singular opportunity: the chance to travel back in time. However, the journey is governed by a set of stringent rules:
- They can only visit people who have been to the café.
- They cannot change the present, no matter what they do in the past.
- They must sit in a particular seat.
- They must return before their coffee gets cold.
The sequel introduces a fresh set of characters, each with their own deeply personal reasons for wanting to travel back in time. These new tales are filled with emotion, exploring the complexities of human relationships and the enduring power of memory.
The Four Main Stories:
- The Daughter Who Couldn't Say Goodbye:
- Character: Kazu, the cafe's waitress.
- Plot: Kazu grapples with her past and decides to use the cafe's time-traveling ability to visit her deceased mother. Through this journey, she seeks closure and understanding, reflecting on the mother-daughter bond and the unspoken words between them.
- The Comedian of Destiny:
- Character: A struggling comedian named Gohtaro.
- Plot: Gohtaro returns to a pivotal moment in his career when he performed in front of a crucial audience. He aims to understand why he didn't achieve the success he hoped for and to find peace with his life's trajectory. This story examines themes of ambition, self-worth, and the definition of success.
- The Love That Will Never Be:
- Character: Yukio, a man who was separated from his love, Miki.
- Plot: Yukio revisits the day Miki left Japan, hoping to understand her reasons and perhaps gain a sense of closure. This narrative explores the pain of separation, the enduring nature of love, and the hope that comes with understanding the past.
- The Married Couple's Happiness:
- Character: Yukiko and Fumiko, a couple who have drifted apart.
- Plot: They travel back to a happier time in their marriage, trying to rekindle their connection and remind themselves of the love that initially brought them together. This story highlights the challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship and the importance of remembering shared joy and love.
Like I said before, I was left with a number of questions;
1. How can the argument that the time-traveling element trivializes the complexities of human relationships and the personal growth that comes from real-life experiences and challenges be addressed?
2. Should we consider the possibility that the strict rules governing time travel in the café may limit the potential for genuine emotional exploration and character development, as the characters are confined to certain restrictions and conditions?
3. What about those who argue that the time-traveling aspect may overshadow the underlying themes of resilience, human connection, and the enduring quest for meaning, thus detracting from the emotional depth of the stories?
Themes and Reflections:
Throughout these interconnected stories, Kawaguchi emphasizes the importance of human connections and the intricate web of relationships that define our lives. The café serves as a microcosm of the larger world, where people seek solace, understanding, and sometimes a second chance. The time-traveling element, while fantastical, underscores a universal truth: while we cannot change the past, we can learn from it, gain closure, and find peace in the present.
The narrative is imbued with a sense of nostalgia and the bittersweet recognition that while we cannot alter the past, we can change how we perceive and understand it. Each character's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring quest for meaning and connection in our lives.
In "Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Café," Kawaguchi masterfully blends elements of fantasy with profound emotional truths, creating a series of stories that are both heart-warming and deeply reflective.
